Last Saturday morning, after the storms cleared, I had the privilege of captaining a boat for the CAST for Kids Foundation on beautiful Skiatook Lake. For those who may not know, CAST for Kids is an organization that hosts fishing events across the country, giving children with special needs the chance to enjoy a day of fishing. Kids can cast a line from the bank or, like in our case, head out on the water in a boat.
Meeting Andrew
Jesse and I were paired with Andrew and his father. Although Andrew had been fishing before, he was a little nervous at the start. That changed quickly once he reeled in his first few bluegill. With every cast, his confidence grew—and so did his smile.
By the end of the trip, Andrew had landed 10 fish, including a drum weighing over two pounds. The highlight of the day? His unforgettable battle cry when that drum hit the net. The excitement and joy he and his father shared is something I’ll carry with me for a long time.
Why CAST for Kids Matters
This was the 4th year that Skiatook Lake hosted the CAST for Kids event, and everything was incredibly well organized. Events like this do more than just put fish on the line—they create lasting memories for families, bring communities together, and remind us all of the joy found in fishing.
Personally, it was one of the most rewarding days I’ve had on the water. I’m truly grateful for the opportunity to serve as a captain, and I’m already looking forward to next year’s event.
How You Can Get Involved
If you’re an angler, I encourage you to check if there’s a CAST for Kids event near you. Volunteering your time and boat can give a child and their family an unforgettable day outdoors. Trust me—it’s an experience you’ll never forget.
And if you’re in Oklahoma, Skiatook Lake is just one of many fantastic fishing spots. You can learn more about fishing locations, regulations, and tips through the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation.
Thank You
A huge thank you to the sponsors, event directors, Lake Patrol, and all the families who made this day possible. Your support and dedication make memories like Andrew’s possible.
